A new bag design for Rickshaw Bagworks

Hey friendlies,

check it out. This is a bag design for the rickshaw bag company, which is located in the historic Dogpatch district of San Francisco.

This is why I was up until 2:30 in the morning yesterday and why I can’t spell properly today. It’s totally worth it. I’ll let you know when these are available for purchase!

Silkscreened Ox pillow cover from Karie Aineb

Friendlies:

look what my friend Karie sent me! It’s a silkscreened pillow cover based on this image. We spent a day silkscreening the ox image onto different fabrics, and then Karie did the rest! The back of the pillow is a lovely dark blue velvet. It’s beautifully constructed and sewn. Neet, huh?

‘Secrets of the Dog Park’ selected for American Illustration 30!

Friendlies,

‘Secrets of the Dog Park’, my screenprint that explores the issues of the gay dog community, has been selected for inclusion in American Illustration 30, a sooper groovy hard-cover compendium of hand-picked images. This is the seventh time my work has appeared in the book. “From more than 7,000 pictures entered by over 1,100 illustrators, magazines, agencies, publishers and schools, the jury selected, by a majority vote or better, only 316 images to appear in the book and represent the best pictures from 2010.”

Buy yourself a copy of the print here.

Halloween is Upon Us, My Lovelies

Dear Fans of Dressing Up and Acting Like a Goofball:

your national holiday is quickly approaching! Time to get out the pumpkin carving tools, fake spider webs and strobe lights! Time to stock up on pounds and pounds of delectable sugary sweets! Time to watch Let Me In and clutch your friend’s arm in the theater! The midnight hour approaches – can you hear Miss Gulch flying through the air?

We’re getting excited over at Chez Wertz because Falltime is Here. And that means cooler weather, falling leaves, and beautiful orange afternoon light. And Orange = Halloween.

Driveway Follies Poster 2010

This is a poster design I just finished for Carl and Larry, who, out of the kindness of their hearts, produce “The Driveway Follies”, an amazing Marionette Show and Yard Haunt in the Glenview district of Oakland, CA. Larry spends all year (literally) on this show. The puppet show has gotten so popular that they’re doing the show on both the 30th and 31st of October.

The poster is meant to be a two-parter: the top bit can be shown separately from the bottom bit. I’m thinking of perforating the posters like two giant stamps. It will be printed with orange, blue, and glow-in-the-dark inks. Get out your blacklights from Spencer’s gifts! 17′ x 24′. I’ll have them available for sale soon in the shop.

In Other Halloween News: The Argyll Adventure Tree is doing our annual Halloween radio show this coming-up Thursday, on the 7th of October, from 5-7 pm. You can listen in here. You can listen to 2009′s Halloween show here, and 2008′s show here.

Now I must close, and go meet the ghosts who’ve come out to socialize.

Have a safe & happy All-Hallow’s!

The Long View : Art in Antarctica

My friend and amazing artist Michael Bartalos is taking part in a once-in-a-lifetime art project in Antarctica. Have a look see.

From the site: “Greetings and welcome to The Long View Project blog. My name is Michael Bartalos and I’m pleased to be designated the Academy’s first Affiliated Artist. I’ll soon be on my way to Antarctica on an exciting project at the crossroads of art and science, and you’re invited to follow along.

My ultimate objective is to create a very long piece of sculptural artwork using recycled materials from polar research facilities in order to raise international awareness of resource conservation and eco-preservation practices in Antarctica, and by extension, to promote and inspire sustainability worldwide. In the process, I expect to learn a whole lot about environmental issues, scientists’ lives on the ice, the history of polar exploration, and creativity’s role on the southern continent.”

2009 peace calendar for lee wood press

Here are the FREE and FABULOUS calendars that we’re giving away to friends of the Wertzateria! ‘Tis true! Just drop me a line with your snail mail address and we’ll pop one in the mail to you! These aren’t your run-of-the mill calendars of puppies and bunnies, no. These calendars are chock full of Wertzy goodness to behold, a month-at-a-time. My sister Julie and I designed these for Lee Wood Press in San Francisco.

The only thing I ask in return is that you do a little bit of thinking about Peace (the theme of the calendar). What does it mean to you? How do you cultivate Peace?

What’s so funny ’bout Peace Love and Understanding?
